How has the writing of H.P. Lovecraft influenced contemporary horror fiction and film? What makes the "cosmic horrors" of Lovecraft so much more frightening, at least for some, than the ghosts, vampires, and zombies that dominate contemporary horror? What constitutes genuinely Lovecraftian horror? Why are so many direct film adaptations of Lovecraft's work so awful (in more ways than one)?
