Construct Your Own Dress Form or Male Torso Form

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED

Maximum Participants: 16
Minimum Age: 16
Materials Fee: $25
Workshop Duration: 3 hrs

Special Art Guest Thyrza Segal will instruct and guide you in the creation of a personalized dress form or male torso form using nothing more than plastic wrap and tape!

If you like to make costumes or clothing for yourself, this will be an invaluable part of your tool kit. It is also a very good technique to learn if you need to ever make costumes or clothing for kids or someone with an unusual body type.

Working in teams of two, participants will wrap each other in plastic wrap and then proceed to apply layers of tape to their partner's torso to create a shape that is true to their body. The form will be cut off using scissors and will be malleable enough to put into luggage at that point. Thyrza will then demonstrate how to make a body form stand so that you can finish your dress form at home.

Thyrza ;worked as a professional cutter (costume pattern maker, fitter and sewing supervisor) for many years and is able to help with any costume questions you may have.

Participants must bring an old, tight fitting T-shirt to wear underneath the wrappings. The tighter it is, the better and be aware that the T-Shirt may get a hole snipped in it when the form is cut off your body.

Note that tank tops are not advised as they will be uncomfortable because the plastic wrap would be directly on your skin.

Women should wear their best support brassieres (if they need support). This will ensure that you are not disappointed when the mold is not as "perky" as you would like it to be.

We recommend that you sign up with a partner. This way you can both have your body's taped up by someone you know. If you don't have a partner but are still interested in participating, please contact the Program Director (programming@vcon.ca) and efforts will be made to team people up.

Children are welcome to be used as models only. If you have a child model, please make sure they have suitable entertainment with headphones because it is very dull for active kids to stand in one place for a lengthy period of time while someone tapes them up.
