For Love of Japanese Space Pirates

Session duration: 2 hrs

Join Monster Attack Team for a celebration of Space Piracy!

Arguably the most famous Space Pirate in the world is Leiji Matsumoto’s SPACE PIRATE CAPTAIN HARLOCK, but Harlock is only the tip of the iceberg. While of course Captain Harlock sums up everything cool about being a space pirate, his show lead directly to two more series that featured space pirates, GALAXY EXPRESS 999 and QUEEN OF A THOUSAND YEARS. As well, Harlock was the spiritual ancestor of later shows such as Butch Terasawa’s Cobra and even last year’s BODACIOUS SPACE PIRATES in which a group of high school girls fly the jolly roger and terrorize the space ways.

Stan Hyde

By day Stan teaches film students both locally and international. By night, Stan is a Nightmare, and gives people evil dreams. He has been a past VCON Artist Guest of Honor because he builds and paints models of monsters (and other SF subjects). He has been paid as a writer of a comic book, for magazines about Japanese fantasy films, and dinosaurs, and he helped write one of the first online film courses.
